Project 2: Anthropogenic Stalactites

Anthropogenic Stalactites Remix

A power strip makes the consumption of electricity more efficient by allowing multiple devices to be powered from a single socket.

When positioned vertically, set against a night sky, with billowing smoke, a power strip convincingly transforms into a power plant. Without power plants, power strips would be useless.

When we use power strips and electricity more generally, we rarely think about where it comes from. There are nearly 7000 power plants in the U.S. alone, with 50% of electricity coming from coal burning power plants. In Ohio, that figure is nearly 60%. Only 6% of our electricity nationwide comes from cleaner, renewable sources – solar, wind, and hydroelectric.

When we look at a power strip, envisioning it as a polluting power plant is not far from truth.
